Business Plan Development Workshop Series
What is a business plan and why do I need one? A business plan is a critical tool for outlining the strategy and developing the tactics to manage your business. This document organizes all the information derived from your research and explains how you will start and operate your business. This interactive six-part series is delivered on Tuesday evenings over six weeks and provides in-depth instruction on preparing each section of the business plan. The descriptions below explain the content that will be covered in each class. $180 + GST for the six-part series.

Research and Exploration: September 18 (5:30 to 8:30 pm)
In this session you will explore and begin to refine your business concept. Various primary and secondary research tools and techniques will be discussed so that you can evaluate what research you need to obtain in order to have the necessary information to develop a realistic and effective plan.

Analysis and Evaluation: September 25 (5:30 to 8:30 pm)
Once you have conducted the research you will need to analyze the data. In this session, you will learn how to evaluate and assess the information you have collected. Effective analysis will enable you to build a strong foundation for the next stages: the development of the marketing and operational strategies which are key elements of business success.

Marketing Part I: October 2 (5:30 to 8:30 pm)
Marketing is a very important aspect of every business. In the first class devoted
to marketing, you will explore the importance of differentiation, positioning,
and establishing a well thought out brand/image for your business and product/service. There will also be discussion about pricing strategies and how your costing and pricing model will affect sales and profit potential. The class ends with a review of sales methods and the channels of distribution you will use to get your product/service into the marketplace.

Marketing Part II: October 9 (5:30 to 8:30 pm)
The marketing discussion continues with an exploration of marketing options. You will look at various traditional promotion tools (advertising, public relations, personal selling, sales promotion) and then consider on-line strategies (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, You Tube, Pinterest, blogging). The class finishes with an examination of the marketing plan which is the packaging of the elements discussed in these two classes into a strategic action plan to create awareness about your product/service and get it to your target customers.

Operations Planning, Risk Analysis and Sales Forecasting: October 16 (5:30 to 8:30 pm)
In this session you will explore the operations plan with a focus on identifying effective processes and systems. You will also take into consideration the physical and human resources required to ensure the business is able to meet its sales and marketing objectives. Potential risks to your business will be reviewed and a template to assess and mitigate those risks will be provided. The class wraps up with a discussion of sales forecasting methods.

Financial Planning and Management: October 23 (5:30 to 8:30 pm)
In the final session of the series, you will learn how to apply the research and planning from the previous workshops to develop realistic financial projections for the business. Cash flow budgets, income statements and balance sheets will be reviewed and tools will be provided to support analysis of the feasibility of your business strategy based on the financial projections.

Biography
Alanna Keefe, Business Advisor
An experienced entrepreneur and accomplished business and fund development professional, Alanna has 20 years experience serving the not-for-profit sector. At 23 she sold her first entrepreneurial venture, a successful contemporary gallery/custom framing business. Over the past 10 years Alanna has operated a consulting practice focused in the areas of leadership and fund development, strategic planning, human resources management, marketing, and communications. In addition, she has worked as a member of senior leadership teams for several large arts and educational institutions where she implemented innovative and effective programs, identified business opportunities, led operational improvement, and drove implementation for start-up and existing business partnerships. In 2007 Alanna initiated her MBA studies at the University of Manitoba

Nancy Brommell, Business Advisor
An experienced business professional with an entrepreneurial approach, Nancy was a Business Development Specialist with the Province of Manitoba before joining the Women’s Enterprise Centre team in 2011. She holds a Bachelor of Human Ecology from the University of Manitoba and has completed training in business counselling and accounting. In addition to assisting hundreds of women start and grow their businesses, Nancy was instrumental in the development of the Women’s Business Network in Southeast Manitoba. Over the years, she has developed and delivered a variety of sessions for women entrepreneurs and through her own contract training business, has taught marketing courses to students in the Business Administration diploma course at Red River College.

Angela Hilland, Program Manager, WEC-Tech
An experienced business professional with an entrepreneurial approach, Angela has been involved with a wide variety of organizations and industries, including custom manufacturing, software based technology, hospitality, retail, and real estate development and management. She has developed a broad base of knowledge in several functional areas, including financial and human resources management, strategic planning, information technology, marketing, and business development. Angela holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Honours degree with a major in Marketing from the University of Manitoba, and earned her CGA designation in 1999.

Parking
There is ample parking in lots and at meters close to the Centre. Watch for no stopping zones and no-parking meters during morning rush hour (7 - 9 am) and afternoon rush hour (3:30 - 5:30 pm).

All on-street meters are limited to one or two hours on weekdays between 9 am - 5:30 pm.
Meters are free weekdays after 5:30 pm.
